7 A New Theorem for Black Holes ∗

چکیده

A new theorem for black holes is established. The mass of a black hole depends on where the observer is. The horizon mass theorem states that for all black holes: neutral, charged or rotating, the horizon mass is always twice the irreducible mass observed at infinity. The horizon mass theorem is crucial for understanding the occurrence of Hawking radiation. Without black hole radiation, the Second Law of Thermodynamics is lost. ∗Closing Lecture The XXVI International Colloquium on Group Theoretical Methods in Physics, New York, June 26-30, 2006

Towards a Novel no-hair Theorem for Black Holes

We provide strong numerical evidence for a new no-scalar-hair theorem for black holes in general relativity, which rules out spherical scalar hair of static four dimensional black holes if the scalar field theory, when coupled to gravity, satisfies the Positive Energy Theorem. This sheds light on the no-scalar-hair conjecture for Calabi-Yau compactifications of string theory, where the effectiv...

Horizon Mass Theorem Honorable Mention Gravity Research Foundation 2005

A new theorem for black holes is found. It is called the horizon mass theorem. The horizon mass is the mass which cannot escape from the horizon of a black hole. For all black holes: neutral, charged or rotating, the horizon mass is always twice the irreducible mass observed at infinity. Previous theorems on black holes are: 1. the singularity theorem, 2. the area theorem, 3. the uniqueness the...

Rotating Black Holes in Higher Dimensions

The properties of higher-dimensional black holes can differ significantly from those of black holes in four dimensions, since neither the uniqueness theorem, nor the staticity theorem or the topological censorship theorem generalize to higher dimensions. We first discuss black holes of Einstein-Maxwell theory and Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory with spherical horizon topology. Here new typ...

On the absence of scalar hair for charged rotating black holes in non-minimally coupled theories S SEN and N BANERJEE

Recently there has been a considerable resurgence in the no scalar hair theorem for black holes. Investigations regarding no hair theorem, however, had started about thirty years ago [1]. Inspired by Israel’s uniqueness theorem for Schwarzschild and Reissner–Nordstrom black holes [2] and Carter [3] and Wald’s [4] uniqueness theorem for Kerr black holes, Wheeler anticipated that gravitational co...

Higher dimensional black holes and supersymmetry

It has recently been shown that the uniqueness theorem for stationary black holes cannot be extended to five dimensions. However, uniqueness is an important assumption of the string theory black hole entropy calculations. This paper justifies this assumption by proving a uniqueness theorem for supersymmetric black holes in five dimensions. Some remarks concerning general properties of non-super...
